#TRLT Tuesday Traveller – Brian Cicioni

Please give a warm welcome to today’s #TRLT Tuesday Traveller, Brian Cicioni.

As soon as Brian got his driver’s license, he started going to see his favorite rock bands and quickly realized that he wanted to spend as much time traveling as possible. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he started traveling overseas and has since visited 40 countries spanning 5 continents.

Q: Why do you like taking The Road Less Travelled?

A: As far back as I can remember, I always enjoyed being different. When I was younger I felt better about myself when I was listening to music that nobody else did. Nowadays, it feels great to travel to places that few others visit and eat what few others do. Taking the road less traveled is natural to me. Henry Rollins is one of the people I admire the most and one of my favorite lyrics of his is “swimming in the mainstream is such a lame dream.”

Q: What are your top 5 destinations?

A:

  1. New York
  2. San Francisco
  3. Washington, D.C.
  4. London
  5. Boston

Q: What destinations are you most keen to visit?

A:  I’m an urban explorer who prefers cities. I enjoy using public transportation. For example, I did not have a car during any of my last three trips to California. I visit some rural areas as well, but it’s usually because of a specific historic site(s). For example, I’ve been to most of the presidential sites in the United States.

Q: Share the story of one of your favourite travel photos.Unisphere-5402x3601

A: It’s in my favorite city, probably our most international and it’s a globe. Looking at this reminds me of how much I still haven’t seen, but when I’m in New York, there’s no other place I would rather be.

Q: How did you find out about #TRLT Twitter Chat and what is it about the community and joining that you love most?

A: I think I found out about #CultureTrav first and that led me to #TRLT. Most of my life, I’ve taken the road less traveled, so it’s great to be part of a travel community dedicated to that. For example, my new favorite thing to do in Philadelphia is visit Cambodia Town, which most people have never heard of. Even though a few people seemed interested when I described it, nobody that I know personally has gone yet.

Q: What is the best piece of travel advice you can share?

A: If you are curious about a place, go there! The world is not as dangerous as the news portrays. Yes, bad things happen, but my biggest travel-related fear is getting into a car accident on the way to the airport. The best documentary film, travel show, etc. is no substitute for experiencing a destination first-hand.
