Ghana will always have a special place in my heart. For many reasons Ghana was my refuge after months on a gruelling overland journey through West Africa using only local transport.
It was here that we saw other foreign faces, heard English and could stay in a “backpacker” hostel for the first time in ages. All things I was desperate for as a 17-year-old girl, craving any kind of familiarity. As a bonus Ghana is a gorgeous country!
We tracked and followed wildlife in Mole National Park and walked from tree top to tree top in the dense forest on suspension bridges in Kakum National Park. We listened to Reggae on the beach as we smelled sizzling meat being prepared on open fires.
It was here that we met soon-to-be travel companion Ben Southall, future winner of “The Best Job in the World” and made unforgettable friendships with locals, volunteers and travellers.
But the reason Ghana will stay in my heart forever is because it gave me my future husband. It was in Ghana that our incredible friendship and romance began and led us to where we are now nearly 9 years and 45 countries later.
