In 2008 my family backpacked through Liberia, only a few years after the recent and intense civil war they experienced in their country.
We stayed with a lovely local family we found via Couch Surfing and they welcomed us into their home for a whopping three weeks while we waited for a cargo ship to take us to the border of Cote d’Ivoire. They were able to share first hand, their gruesome stories of the blood and slaughtering they witnessed during the civil war.
Liberia is definitely not one of those commercial safari countries you imagine when you hear the word “Africa”. It has very little tourism and is not for the beginner traveller, but no less worth a visit.
See the photo essay below to get a brief view of this West African country.
