#TRLT Tuesday Traveller – Kaitlin Denny

Today, I’m excited to introduce Kaitlin Denny from @travelfareatwel as this week’s #TRLT Tuesday Traveller. She is an engineer from nine to five and a traveler and blogger the rest of the time. She’s lived her whole life in the Midwest, and she loves exploring and sharing the natural beauty in this area. Although she loves the Midwest, she’s yearning to explore other parts of the world, too, especially Central America and Southeast Asia. She loves adventure, trying new foods, and sharing her experiences with others to hopefully inspire and show them that they can see the world too, even if they have a nine-to-five job.

Q: Why do you like taking The Road Less Travelled?

A: I like to visit destinations that are not as well known and really be able to submerse myself in the culture. I love to learn about the daily lives of the locals and get to experience new traditions and make new memories. I feel like venturing off-the-beaten path always results in unique experiences for me, and I tend to stumble upon some of the most interesting sights when I explore on my own.

Q: What are you top five destinations?

A: Right now, my top five destinations are:

– Bruges, Belgium

– Colorado (anywhere in the mountains)

– Lyon, France

– Northern Arkansas (Buffalo River region and there’s a few great state parks with excellent hiking)

– Zaragoza, Spain

Q: What destinations are you most keen to visit?

A: I would say “everywhere” since everywhere is on my bucket list, but I guess to be more specific I’ve really been wanting to spend some time traveling through Central America. I enjoy being outside whether it’s hiking, kayaking, cycling, or snowboarding, so I’m more drawn toward destinations that can provide a couple of those activities. I’ve also started to shy away from big cities in the past couple of years and have been trying to explore smaller, more authentic towns.

Q: Share the story of one of your favorite travel photos

A: This photo was taken at the top of the Continental Divide in Winter Park, Colorado. This was one of my favorite trips because I got to try snowmobiling for the first time. I went snowmobiling to the Continental Divide and this was the view from the top with Winter Park and Fraser Valley down below. Standing at the top, I felt like I was on top of the world and that I could conquer anything. It was such a unique experience and was one of the most incredible views I’ve ever seen.

Q. How did you find out about #TRLT Twitter Chat and what do you love most about joining/the community?

A. I actually found out about #TRLT Twitter Chat by scrolling through my timeline because several of the bloggers I follow participate in the weekly chats. At that point, I was looking for new ways to meet other travelers and I was curious what #TRLT stood for so I decided to join the chat the following week. I had joined a few other travel-related twitter chats previously and wasn’t overly impressed, but I was hooked after my first #TRLT chat! I was and am still today amazed at the participation and interaction between all the people that join the weekly chats. I feel like some twitter chats don’t get much interaction between participants, but #TRLT is definitely not that way. I love seeing the multitude of different pictures and responses to the questions and getting to start side conversations with others about their experiences. Another thing I love about #TRLT Twitter Chat is that the participants come up with the questions each week! I love seeing the variety of questions, it’s so interesting to see each individual person’s perspective on a one or two word topic.

Q: What is the best piece of travel advice you can share?

A: Get out from behind that screen! Technology and social media have become such a dominant part of our daily lives (especially for bloggers), so I think it’s important to always remember to get out from behind the screen while you’re traveling. Whether you’re snapping pictures, updating social media, researching destinations, watching movies, or anything in between, be sure to set aside some time to put down the electronics. Put away your phone, laptop, or camera and soak in the destination with your own five senses. Don’t forget to live in the moment; there will always be time for pictures or a status update later.

  1. If you like historic places you will love Zaragoza there is so much hidden, also if you travel outside of the city you have great scenery and a couple of nice places to have a day detouring.
